I've only been letting the gals out in the evenings when we're outside. Fenced in area about 1.5 acres, with 3 dogs that help keep predators at bay. Today was way too hot to stay outside. Dogs were liking the AC as much as us. We're sitting inside, soaking up the AC, when the dogs go ballistic. Looked up to see a Redtail hawk flying towards the coop. The dogs seen it too and alerted us to the threat. I quickly let the dogs out and the gals had no clue what was lurking in the trees, no rooster.

They didn't want to go back into there coops, as it's still quite light out, but scratch grains helped get them in there respective coops.

I hope those good dogs got some good treats for their heroics!

I have been using scratch grains to lure my girls into their coops but was recently reminded that it's harder for chickens to digest grain when it's incredibly HOT out. But, I'm guessing you're only tossing out enough to keep them safe, so I doubt it's a problem.

Congrats on keeping everyone safe; stay as cool as possible!

The dogs definitely got some belly rubs and a treat. The scratch grains were close by and I only used a tiny bit to get them inside there runs.
