Hi! One of our ladies, about a month ago, started losing feathers around her neck area. No sign of injury. No sign of bullying either. We figured maybe she was molting or somehow got herself stuck on something that pulled her feathers loose.

Now today, she appears to be having an issue with her right eye. It doesn’t appear swollen. There’s no goop or crusties. No obvious sign of injury.

Shes eating, drinking, laying eggs, and otherwise acting normal.

The rest of the flock is healthy.

Not sure if these are both separate injuries or if there’s something she needs to be treated for that we are missing.

Any help/guidance would be greatly appreciated!! Thank you!!!

I would put some eye drops or antibiotic ointment into the eye twice a day. If you see any bubbles or foam in the eye, then get some Tylosin online, and treat for 5 days.

As you suspect she may have caught her head in a net/fence/tight spot reaching for a bite. Naturally she panicked and in doing so may have scratched her eye so it hurts. Have you tried to pull her lid down to see if the eye is damaged? I have a pop eyed hen. Not sure how she did it either as she was given to me in this condition. She does fine with one eye. Nothing to worry about.

Is there a specific kind of drops or ointment you recommend?

Lubricant eye drops are good if the eye is dry. However, you can use saline or eye wash to flush the eye. Terramycin eye ointment from the feed store is good, and I have used generic Neosporin for a pecked eye. If you notice any other symptoms or problems walking let us know.
