Cloudy Days in the Coop - My Adventures with Chickens.

Pics
Thank you, TwoCrows. I was (and still am), devastated. But you’re right. We do the best we can. :) I’m so sorry about Pearl. That sounds so heartbreaking to find. She must have been a very sweet hen. :hugs
Thanks Starburst! :hugs I don't think we ever get over the loss of our babies. We bond with them as chicks as if they are our own children. We never forget them and miss them forever, the coop is never the same after they are gone.

How is your flock doing this afternoon? How is Boba? :)

That is so very true. :)

My flock is doing pretty well! I was walking down to the coop to let them free-range, as the sun came out, when I felt a shadow swoop over me. Glancing up, I realized it was the hawk. I managed to snap a picture of it. Needless to say, I did not let the chickens out, even with me being there. Boba is still doing well, she laid an egg today and has been hanging out with the others. :)

Nice photo! I do love the hawks, but not too close to the chicken yard! :D

Great to hear Boba laid an egg and is hanging out with the others. She sounds so sweet. 💖 Give her some lovin' for me. :)

I agree, the lights look so fun! 💡
Do you leave those lights on all night? I would love to leave a small light in my coop all night but I thought I wasn’t supposed to. My Impression from what I’ve been reading is that their coop should not be lit at night. My three-month-old chickens are still fighting at night for the Perfect spot. Half the roost bars remain empty while everyone wants the other half. The roosts are high And I am afraid someone’s going to get hurt or will be unable to find the stairs back to the roost bars.

These aren't lights in my coop. However you are correct in that a coop should be completely dark at night for good health of the chickens. Any light at all can not only disturb their sleep cycle but can cause hormonal changes which are not healthy.

Roost bars shouldn't be all that high. Mine are only about 15 inches off the floor. As long as the birds are off the floor, all is good. Jumping down from high roosts will injure/sprain their legs and joints, bodies, frost bite is more common with higher roost bars. Set your bars so they can hop up from the floor. You may need to physically move them around on the bars to find out who sleeps best next to who to minimize the bickering at roosting time.

No, I don’t leave the lights on all night. :) I turn them on in the evening and turn them off at night after I do a headcount and lock up the coop. :)

TwoCrows has given great advice on your roosting situation. :)

I just love your photos! :)
Thank you, TwoCrows! Sorry for the wait. I’m not used to that much wind in these parts, so 25 MPH was pretty windy in my area. It took me a long time because I had to keep going inside when I felt it was unsafe. I also was narrowly missed by approximately a 4 foot long branch that fell down. I was about a foot away from it.
