I took in a grown rooster today. He has bad bumble foot so I cut it out. I've had to do this before with one of my hens. His foot is almost closed like a fist it won't open flat. Should I force it to flatten it seems like I would be breaking his toes if I do. A

Some chickens end up with permanently curled toes. I read it's from improper incubation temperatures. It just happens as they grow. I've never had one with curled toes have any lasting problems from it except it looks unsightly.

I would get some procaine penicillin G from the refrigerated medicines at your feed store, and start him on that. There are a few brands. Get 4 or 5 3 ml syringes with 20 gauge 1/2 inch needles. Give him 0.25 or 1/4 ml once a day for 4-5 days. Even better would be getting a stronger broad spectrum antibiotic from a vet. Curled under toes could be from his infection, but also may be seen with riboflavin (vitamin B) deficiency or sometimes with Mareks disease. Is he able to stand and walk? You can give him 1/2 tablet of human B complex tablets crushed into his feed daily or 3 ml daily of Poultry Cell vitamins (not NutriDrench as it does not contain riboflavin.)

We are going to try the antibiotics. He actually gets around pretty good with it like it is. It also looks like he has another spot starting on the side may cut it out tonight. I want to get him healthy as possible before introduction to the rest of the flock.
