My one Buff Rock, Angelika, is clucking and puffing up like a broody and her comb is all bloody because the others are picking on her. She laid an egg this morning and was sitting on the nest until I took her out. She puffed up when I took her out.

I only have 4 hens and one communual nesting box which is quite large but they won't let her stay in it. Daisy my BR pecks her a lot.

Is she broody or is this some kind of defensive posturing?

Any suggestions?

Broodies don't lay. If she were laying to collect a clutch of eggs, she should be getting up as normal. I'd watch a while to see if I could figure out whether there was one particular bully or lead bully, so I could put her in chicken jail for a week or so. There may be something else wrong with Angelika.

my buff orpington does this to she will go for a few months at a time beeing good then she starts being "broody" again im not sure why she dose it all i can tell you is put wound coat on her comb and make sure you take her out so she can get a drink and something too eat. if any one else has anything to add or break this habbit i would like to know too!

She is out now walking with the rest of the hens. She makes the clucking sounds and puffs up when one of the other hens gets close to her.

Do the other hen normally pick on a broody?
