Hi,
So I thought I'd share my story b/c its cute.
So my family owns a farm and my dad being an animal lover we have many chickens/ducks/geese etc. We live in Canada - so winter is brutal =/ many chickens have died this winter (its pretty sad). So 2 years ago my dad brought home a yellow baby chick that he found standing amongst sheep alone. He was pretty active - really cute so ...we kept him. Raised him - we wanted to eventually take him back to the farm - however, he has become our dog.
Yes that is correct- he lives INSIDE our house and thinks that we are his family. He's a genetically dead chicken since he thinks that shoes are his mates, he follows us everywhere. He grew up with us and is now a beautiful white and golden coloured rooster
. He follows us Up and down stairs - he has learned to open doors that aren't clicked shut, he likes to sit on soft carpets, on the corner of beds and snuggles under blankets to fall asleep. My little sister treats him like her baby so he's constantly in her arms - its cute b/c he responds to his name: Cheeko (but recently we've resorted to a new pet name: clucky.)
So one day my dad put these eggs under a duck and low and behold a few weeks later 6 babies came out. All with distinctive markings - so of course w/ no bother hen to stay with them - we brought them home. And they were really really adorable.
We named them:
Doc, Dopey, happy, grumpy, chip and dale.
The next day 2 more showed up and we named them dot and fluffy.
Dot unfortunately died a few days later (I guess he weaker than the rest). The other ones grew up beautifully - all dark colours (none like clucky) B/c it was right at the end of fall that these babies hatched - we brought them home - so they've been living WITH ME (inside my home) for the last 7 months. Now its time for them to go back. (WE kept them in the laundry room - occasionally took them out to the backyard (not in the snow though) and I clean up the room everyweekend so they live pretty cleanly.
Chip and Dale both turned out to be roosters, while Happy and Doc are REALLY tall hens? (or so we thought). Unfortunately none day I discovered happy - WITH A LIMP! (its tile floor so she must have been doing some jumping - so i took care of her isolated her - and band-aided it up really well. She's mostly better now. A few days after i also discovered Chip w/ the same problem (he was the dominant rooster). So i isolated him as well but I may have put him back too early - so both of his legs have healed - but a bit twisted - he's still isolated (and see's the others every so often).
Recently I've discovered the Doc (hearing a new rooster call) is a male as well! Although I guess he will a be very big rooster since his development is slower than Chip and Dale.
Dale and Grumpy (and Fluffy) became a pair, while Doc and dopey become another. Happy stays isolated in the cage (but in the same room) - she's very...aggressive for a hen. She's tall and the only one that bites! So i'm always careful when I pick her up and I keep her away from the rooster since his mating process will hurt her. Dale is an aggressive rooster while Doc is more docile.
A few days ago - suddenly - I was coming to put them to sleep when I discovered fluffy (one of my brightest and outgoing hens) - was standing and half shutting her eyes. I picked her up brought her out noticed that a part of her beak was cracked. I imagine she had hit a wall or something, so i gave her food and water and put her in my room so she could rest ( i thought she was in shock). I returned later to find her almost dead - i cradled her and gave her some water - but she ended up vomiting and dying in my arms (sigh). Its still sad to think about I was really attached. I'm not sure how it happened - I'm speculating she hit her head - but there's a saying that when an animal dies prematurely - he/she takes upon calamity that was to befall you. Even if that's just a story - I guess I'm grateful to her - but i miss her
.
Anyways - so now my chickens - live divided b/c of the fighting, in the next few days they will be returning to the farm. We'll put them in a smaller area in the barn at first so that they can get used to the new area before we let them out; or is that a bad idea?
I'm just worried b/c there are 3 roosters =/. I'm planning on keeping Happy and Chip (the hurt foot ones) around until they're all better.
That's my story of how my babies came to be.
(idk how to post pictures?!)
