Clueless breeders (rant)

I just got back from Traders Village and NO ONE HAD A CLUE WHAT THEY WERE SELLING! Also only about 90% spoke only spanish. For those of you who don't know, Traders Villiage is a HUGE flea market that takes place every Saturday and Sunday. Sadly there are animals for sale there.
I looked at the rabbits. They tried selling me some dutch and English spots as Rexs. Then they tried to give me a mini Californian....um...are we making up breeds now? They also had some birds there too. I asked what one of the finches was and they said a Bird. Then i found the puppies. They got an air conditioned room, but the smell was horrid. Nothing was super healthy. I'm mad at these people. They promote the mindless breeding and selling of animals. They give you a list of everything you need to buy, and kindly sell it for the most crazy prices.

HOW CAN YOU SELL SOMETHING YOU KNOW NOTHING ABOUT? HOW CAN YOU BREED IT?

Throw it in a cage with food and water and let them go at it.

That is a sad situation, but one I have seen far too much of.
Just curious, as well...Was there a typo where you said only about 90% of them spoke only English? Around my parts, you'd be very fortunate to find a group of people where 90% of them speak English!

The best thing you can do is write a letter to the owners of the flea market, and tell them very specifically what your concerns were. Better yet, you may want to start a petition asking that vendors who sell animals be monitored more closely.
You also should contact your local humane society. It sounds like the cruelty officer should take a trip to the flea market.

You definitely need to contact your local humane organization or animal control. They might know about the place, but they often don't act until someone reports it.

This comment is not in regards to the situation as I believe everyone has already said how I feel too.

However, I don't think you saw english spots. You could have, but they would have the chain down the sides, they are slender and racy, and have an actual arch to their back. chances are you saw cross bred rabbits that happen to have a butter fly capped ears and a spotted pattern. I breed ES here, and I am used to people saying an animall is an ES just because it has a spotted broken pattern, most of them have never actually seen a real Spot. (I would fear if they really were ES though as they are older by the time they reach 6lbs, they are flightly, and don't have that much meat on them anyway; and do not have the personality to be good pets for kids (as a generalization, some I have are wonderful with kids too).

They are probably rex/NZ crosses or rex/cal crosses, those would be fabulous meat rabbits and have a fairly spotted pattern if a sire/dam had such in their background too.

This was off topic, but as a breeder I always want to encourage proper identification of breeds. And although I do not doubt your abilities and I do not know you personally so I do not mean this personally, most people do not accurately ID Spots in this area.

I am seriously just curious here, but what exactly in the original post sounds like a case for a cruelty officer? I mean, last I checked, the inability to speak English and lack of knoweledge of breeds is not cruelty, which seem to be the primary complaints. The puppies were in air conditioning (bad smell aside) and while it was said that nothing was "super healthy" I just didn't see anything that indicated cruelty.​
