So, obviously, I'm new to chickens. Outside of my brother's pet rooster (not appreciated in suburban NJ) when I was growing up, I've not handled chickens.
I kept landing on this forum whilst searching for answers to really stupid questions (like how to you put your hens to bed at night... answer, you don't--they do that on their own
)
Here's the thing. I'm counting down the months/days until I retire and am scoping out properties in Eastern TN and Western NC (my family all moved there long ago to follow my mother's childhood roots). I plan to start with chickens (and a garden and bees) and see where I go from there. I keep hearing folks say that chickens are a gateway animal to full on homesteading, but for now, I just want to keep them the backyard sort.
I plan to spend much time reading and learning here for now. I may pop up and ask the stupid question or two. And then when I finally settle in my new place, you'll probably not be able to shut me up.
Keeping chickens may be my fourth career. I was a retail jeweler for 13 years, taught writing and Victorian literature a university for several years, and have been a web developer for nearly 25 years or so. Chicken keeper sounds like a nice job promotion!
