The vaccine by all accounts is pretty dubious, but was rushed to market because organic growers can vaccinate but not medicate. If you had no other alternative, vaccination seems more sustainable. But, if you are not going organic, medicated starter is the more effective means of control.
Or, we raise our chickens anti-biotic free (sulfas are considered andibiotics for labeling/marketing requirements), so we just let birds with cocci die and do our best to keep them rotated on fresh ground. But, rotation is by no means a prevention as birds still die.
Oocysts can live in the soils for decades if you are in a climate which doesn't get extremely cold or hot.
