My 4 week old chicks have bloody stool. I have lost 3 chicks yesterday.
I believe that they have cocci. My vet did not have amprol, so I am treating them with
Sulfadimethoxine in the water. This is the second day of treatment. When should I see the bloody stool stop? Has anyone purchased the spray on vaccine for cocci, if so where can I purchase it?

Do I need to worry about my chickens that are older getting this from the babies? How far apart do I need to keep the infected babies from the older chickens?

I am so stressed out. I cant stand to see my baby's sick.

Ok you need some Sumulet asap. Right now if you have it add some powdered milk to the feed. I am guessing that you are feeding a medicated starter?

From my reading before the days of sumulet folks used dairy products for the little ones. So if you dont have powdered milk try what you do have, wet the feed with reg milk, mix in yogurt plain is the best. Removed any un eatten food in 20 min so it does not go bad. Give fresh food. I like the powdered milk seems to work for me on this. Fingers crossed you have some on hand. BTW coffee mate is a non dairy product.

It is rare for an older bird to get Cocci but at times it will happen. You should start to see drastic improvement in a couple of days as it sounds like they had an extreme case. Just follow the vet's dosing directions and give them a full course of meds and afterwards start them on good quality medicated starter. The Cocci vacine can be had from Valley Vet supply on-line.

Sulfadimethoxine is better than sulmet. Don't run out an get sulmet, your vet knew what they were doing.

Are you treating for five days? I think the dose I last had was 15 cc/mil per gallon.

If you have been to a vet, use what they recommend. Although I used Terramycin to get my chicks through the night, that is not reccomended for this problem but it was a life savor. I did go out and buy sulmet with very good luck.
Even with medicated mash I had problems. Good luck!

I think the worst is over... I have lost 4 birds in total.
I think the rest looks of them look pretty good today.

Now that the emergency is over, what kind of resiude does sulfa have? What about terramyacin?


I dont understand how they got so sick. I have another batch of baby chicks that were raised by the moma hen and none of them got sick. They are about 8 weeks old now.
If my adult chickens have the disease and gave it to my new babies why didnt the first batch get it?

I asked the hatchery to vaccinate these birds before they were to be shipped...
when I called today to ask them about the e-mail that I sent asking them to do this they said that their server had went down and they proably didnt get the e-mail

The mom raised chicks vacinate themselves, every time mom poops the chicks go take a little bite and gain immunity to whatever strains of the virus mom has. I've never seen a case of Cocci in chicks raised by mom. Not saying it doesn't happen, just never heard of it.

Brooders make perfect breeding grounds for the bacteria. Moisture and heat. So when they spill their water and the lamp is in a small brooder, pow, they multiply. Plus the chicks scratch and peck, reinfesting themselves.

Make sure you add a supplement with vitamin B, as the sulfa causes deficiencies.

Keep bedding as clean and dry as possible.

My vet recommended a 3 days on, 2 days off, 3 days on for the sulfamet. I am literally cleaning the cage every couple of hours, as I had this licked and it re emerged.
