Coccidiosis (cocci) and your chickens

Saying that it's a bacteria might give some the impression that it can be treated with any antibiotic. Yes, sulfa drugs are an antibiotic that are effective in treating coccidia, but I don't think any other will. The drugs I use to treat it are amprolium, Baycox, but I also have Sulfadimethoxine in case those fail.

True,, I get my bugs switched around sometimes. Protozoa, and a nasty little one at that, especially with all the wet weather we have been having this spring,, for us anyway,,, However,, any treatment used still only allows the bird to develop immunity by killing off just enough for the birds to do that. It's all about keeping the numbers low enough until immunity is built up. Another thing that helps ALOT is just plain good house keeping to start with.. keeping coops clean and dry will help tremendously,,, chickens living in wet poopy coops and runs are just a disaster waiting to happen.
