Coccidiosis/corid Questions

I just found the bloody poop in a small coop with young birds, but I do not have the Corid on hand. I do have Sulmet and Terra Vet (Oxytetracycline) powder. Are these good to use for cocci?

ACV=Apple Cider Vinegar. The mother is the sediment that is left which shows that the vinegar has had little processing therefore more of the "good stuff" remains. You can look for it in the specialty section of your grocery store, but more often you will find it in a health food store.

Sulmet can be used for cocci, but I personally have found that it doesn't work as well. I had a long (several month) battle with cocci among my birds and they kept dying one by one while I was trying Sulmet. Then I got Corid and a week later everyone was fine!

Corid isn't an antibiotic, it has something in it that blocks the absorption of a vitamin that the cocci needs to survive. The Sulmet is actually an antibiotic and works differently, it's much harder on the chicken's body.

Well, it's Saturday and, of course, everything is closed.... It will be Tuesday before I can get Corid, so should I be giving Sulmet until then or should I just keep everybody locked up until I can get Corid??

Someone else might chime in and say otherwise....but I think I would go ahead and start the Sulmet because they'll just get worse while you wait! Then if you don't see major improvement you can stop Sulmet and start the Corid once the store opens again.

When I gave mine Sulmet what happened was they would seem to get better then as soon as I stopped the Sulmet (after 7 days) they would suddenly get worse. So just keep a close eye on them! I think there are different strains of cocci, it could be that my yard has a strain that is Sulmet resistant or something.

Also you can mix powdered milk in their feed, that will help!

Ok, I have 3 different coops/pens and I have locked everybody up in their pens. I have given the Sulmet with ACV to the group with the cocci and just ACV in everybody elses just for good measure.

How contagious is cocci? If my Chihuahua was playing in the same yard the chicks are in, will she catch it? Is it easily spread between pens? If cocci is parasites, will worming the sick ones help? Do I need to lime their coop and pen? I have never had this in my birds before and have no idea what I am facing here....
