Hello,
I've been reading about coccidiosis on here. I'm new to chickens. It sounds aweful. My chicks are on organic feed and I started giving them dirt to play in from the yard. I'm super worried about this coccidiosis and am wondering if there is a preventative? Also what are the first signs of it? I mean does your chick/chicken feel under the weather one day and dead the next? That's how some of the posts I've read, read. I would just feel better armed with knowledge so I decided to ask the experts. I may be spelling coccidiosis wrong. Sorry. Thanks for your help.

There is a vaccine and medicated feed that people use to try to prevent it but neither are bullet proof.

It is very easily 'cured' with an amprolium product such as Corid.
It's good to keep on hand.

Most common signs in young chicks are going off feed, hunching over, lethargic...usually they will LOOK off...not active.

The best preventative is to keep their brooder dry and clean. If you want to be super paranoid, you could weigh them every few days to make sure they are gaining enough weight since no gain or weight loss are often the first signs you will see. Healthy chicks make daily gains. :)

Thanks so much guys! Maybe I am being super paranoid. I keep the brooder clean. Adding new shavings daily and doing a complete change out about every 3 days. Wash and change feeders and waterers several times daily. In my paranoia I did buy corid but powder is all they have. Anybody have any ideas on storing the powder long term? Or is the liquid a better option? I was also told there is another medicine that is better than corid? They are just over 2 weekish old and I started the dirt last week. Thanks I already feel better having some info.

I hate to say this but I have to...have you started researching chicken diseases yet? Coccidiosis is nothing compared to all the other nasty stuff out there. I would take a case of coccidiosis any day of the week over any and all other things.
Try not to over think things. It your chicks are good today save the worry for something else.;)

I keep powder cattle corid 20% I think. After my chicks hit the ground for 1 week from above above the ground pens approx 1mo old I give them 1tsp per gallon fresh per day for 3 days just for good measure and I don't have any problems living in swampy south Louisiana.

just so you know if you don't if you have wheat straw available one 10.00 bale would last a longg time prolly whole breeding season depending on how much you hatch. And it's almost dust free and wicks moisture away (under) itself and keeps them cleaner and drier. Chicks can develop respiratory issues with shavings if the air is stagnant. I've used shavings in the past but it was way too dusty and the chick waste stayed on top and it was expensive relative to straw. Not to be confused with hay which is terrible
