Coccidiosis

I just watched it! Great video! Now it has me super concerned about my layers! I have 2 separate pens. One for the broilers and one for the layers. I did read that older birds should have built up some immunity to it? Is that true? I have 15 layers 6 months-2 years old and six 3week olds. I read a little bit on the thread that the video was posted on about lime for a dry foot bath between pens, would that be sufficient?

Man, three years of raising chickens and this is my first time having an issue like this. I do think I did not have adequate space for these broilers this time around and I slacked a little bit over the weekend cleaning their brooder :(

Lesson learned

It won't hurt to treat your entire flock, all at the same time with the Corid, just to be safe because older birds can and do get coccidiosis too. Do a quick search right here on BYC and you will see many older birds necropsy reports that had large amounts of coccidia. Having too many coccidia in their gut tears up their intestines doesn't allow them to absorb the proper nutrition form the feed which in turn lowers their immunize system and they are more likely to get overloaded with bacteria which will kill them.
So...it's best to prevent this if at all possible.

I wouldn't worry too much about a foot bath but I would keep an eye on all future birds brought in and watch for nasty poops very closely.
