Coccidiosis

When we had the outbreak, I quickly searched here on BYC and found the common ratios were Dawg's and others who said 1/3 teaspoon per gallon. I saw some search quotes that said 1/4 teaspoon per gallon and a couple that said 1/2 teaspoon per gallon. This was for the 20% powder, btw.

I said "Bah!" All I knew is chicks were dying and the precise formula wasn't important to me. I realized that there isn't THAT much difference in any of them. I didn't have time to sweat the details. Close enough for hand grenades and horseshoes.

It saved the rest of the chicks virtually within hours. Within days they were completely normal. That's is what was important to me. What I learned? Even after 50 years of husbandry? I'll never ever put chicks on the ground without it. These birds we have now are not $2 feed store chicks. They are priceless.

Others can do what they wish. I know precisely what I shall do in the future. I learned a painful but important lesson.
Best regards.
Fred, thank you for those words of wisdom, I am currently fighting a cicci outbreak, birds were only out for about two hours, first time out, then got stressed, long story, we are on day 3 of powder treatment at 1/2 tsp per gallon. I have one chick, 6 weeks all of them, that is not responding. All the rest are solid stools, just the one with still runny poo's. Have been dipping her beak and have seen her drink on her own, dip to get extra in....should I raise the dose a bit? She might be patient zero, which would be understandable why she is not responding, might have a heavier overload? What would you suggest? I have been up for days, working with these birds, and all but the one, is doing better...I don't want to lose her, she is my biggest girl...and if I remember correctly DID show symptoms first???? Thanks in advance for ANY help!!!

Yes,you can raise the dose to approx. 1 tsp,or add warm medicated water to feed,so it resembles oatmeal chicks love this and it is easier for the frail ones to eat, plus you have the added benefit of getting more medication into them.

Yup yup. You can tip the waterer over a serving of feed, making a mash. Don't wet more than they can/will eat up in just a few hours. This will double dose them. There is a limit out there, somewhere, when more isn't more anymore, however. If they are strong, they'll respond. If they are too weak, they are too weak.

You can also soothe the intestinal tract by feeding raw milk or yogurt, as I said in my earlier post. Using raw milk or plain yogurt with equal potion of Starter makes a nice porridge as well.

Using Corid in the drinking water of chicks heading to the ground from the brooder (assuming a nice, clean brooder here) is using the Corid in a prophylactic way. THAT is the best way, not waiting until you face an outbreak and chicks are bleeding out, such as we had. Never again.

So according to the above info:

.024% liquid dose is 2 teaspoons
.024% powder dose is 1 teaspoon

.012% liquid dose is 1 teaspoon
.012% powder dose is 1/2 teaspoon

So if this is true, why do people recommend 1/2 teaspoon of the powder and 2 teaspoons of the liquid? What am I missing?

Thank you both!!! Fred, we didn't get the bloody poo's, I watch them like a hawk, spend tons of time with them, knew something wasn't right, then one day of runny poo's had me flying to TSC for corrid, and stuff for after...I am going out now, to try the suggestions, thanks soooo much!!!!

Corid can also be given as an oral drench to cattle, so it's probably fine to dose poultry orally as well, but I do need to verify that. Based on what I've read, I think the dose range is 10-20mg/kg, which is easiest to do with the liquid.

Edited to fix oral dosing error, my bad!

Treat only those in with sick birds and that have exchange of materials, fecal between them. All birds will eventually be exposed and ideally acclimate to coccidian infection so hitting entire place is not going to be productive nor will it stop the exposure.

I just wanted to know where people got their info from or how they came to 1/2 teaspoon (powder) and 2 teaspoons (liquid). Based on what's been posted here, I think that those treating with the powder at 1/2 a teaspoon per gallon (.012% level) are probably *under-medicating* and might see better results if they up their dose to 1 teaspoon (.024%level). I've always used they liquid at 9.5ml/gallon (.024% level) or the oral drench at 10-20mg/kg.

I'm sorry if I've upset anyone here, that was not my intention, I just wanted to know more about Corid dosing and how/why/where people got their dosing info.

I don't think you upset anyone??? Then again, I miss a lot of that kinda stuff...I am like you, need to know it all...just who I am. When it came to the birds being sick though, a rough dose, instead of losing any, was fine with me, I even started at 3/4th tsp, then went down to 1/2 tsp, now back up to 1 tsp, as my big girl is not responding, all others are. I believe she was patient zero, and had it brewing for a bit, but hid it well...I finally got ahold of her today, covered her eyes to calm her down, and felt her all over, she is very thin, compared to the rest of them...and her little crop was full, but not like the others, will be watching her closer now, have a zip tie on her for ID...don't have leg bands yet...that was supposed to be for next years birds.

Fred, THANK YOU..that worked like a charm....I used warm water, put the feed in their baby feeder, and put about a third of the water in the feed. They went nuts over it. I have never seen their crops so full!!! They ate almost two thirds of what I put out...I left it for a bit, just incase a few more want some, will go out in an hour and take it out. Think I will do that for a bit now as it also seemed to make them thirsty? They drank more, even my big girl...a great thing when the meds are in the water!!! They are almost 7 weeks, so are in their coop...the run is STILL not fully done enough to get them in it, so have just taken out crapy bedding, added more shavings and topped with straw, to help with any dampness and to keep them warmer. I really don't like it that much, but is does keep the poo out of the water, they seem to cover the poo up better when scratching around and I top it off each day with more...I also scaped the runny poo off their roost and other places, but until I can get them in the run, Lord willing, tomorrow is should be done, they guys will be back then, then I can do a deep clean with ammonia and change their bedding completely!!! The run is sooo close to done it's driving me nuts it's not finished yet!!! I think I got it through the guys heads it HAS to be done by tomorrow or the next day, so I can do a deep clean on their coop. I also went up to 1 tsp per gallon. Thanks again....you all ROCK!!!!
