Hi!
My Faverolle cockerel has twice respitatory illness. I have treated him both times with antibiotics. Its chronic and he stays with me to the end. He is my little baby, my little yellow chick. But the problem is his butt, because he never clean it. I,ve made a notice, sometimest poop is normal, sometimes its watery. He is over 4 months old and today was the fourth time, when I have to wash off this hard piece of poop from his feathers. He eats well, crows like grazy all day. I notice that he dosent even reach to the butt, he is so big. Is it normal that cocherels are a little a bit lazy or ...

What breed is he?

Sometimes illness and medication can make the poop runny. Diet also plays a part, what do you normally feed him?

Does he roost at night? If he doesn't roost, that contributes to a dirty bottom.

Sorry, i didnt respond immediately. He is faverolle cocherel 5 months old. Last (second) medication was 1,5 month ago. Antibiotic was Pharmasin, (its same that Tylan) Yes, hes poop was runny and mustard color. He eats like other flock basic food for laying hens. And every third day they eat my own mix- its diffrent salads, pac-choy, apple, porridge, sunflower seeds, tuna fish in oil, berries and so on. I have noticed, he eats a lot.
He sleeps only in the roost and almost alone, because he pushed away all pullets. Now I´m worried, he gets again this desease. Last night was in the coop 41 F (its +5 C) I put a pit baking soda in the water, and poop seems to be normal now. I heard about this baking soda when we had last summer terrible heat and chickens drank a lot. I have never seen, that this cocherel cleanse his butt. Is he owerweight?

Do you have photos of him and the poop?

Runny yellow poop, to me would indicate infection. Sometimes a bacterial infection like E. Coli can accompany respiratory illness.

Chickens don't always clean their rear end. You may need to wash him up and get a closer look at the vent. Note if he has any discharge that would look like a yeast infection like Vent Gleet.

You will have to bathe him, and somehow get him somewhere cooler to sleep in summer faverolles do not handle heat well at all. And to answer your question yes they are a big, lazy breed the males don't waste energy. I don't know if yours is obese they are just big birds. You say he eats alot, that isn't normal.Have you treated for worms recently?

I have a Faverolle cross with chronic respiratory disease, she is a heavy weight and a lazy pooper. I periodically trim the feathers around her vent and changed feed from 16% protein to 20%. I also have cut back on her treats. It has definitely helped keep her poops more solid and her rear end much cleaner.

I'm not second guessing anyone but this breed often appears to have respiratory issues that present badly but aren't actually that bad just due to how they're built. That rooster in my photo for instance has periods of time where he only breathes out of his mouth. He does not have respiratory issues though, what he does have is clogged nostrils due to his comb being low to them and him sticking his face completely into whatever he is eating. Some of the hens tend to have the same issue although not as serious due to lack of comb. Nostril cleaning may be a big help to your fella, iv'e actually removed plugs of food and dirt from mine.:)

Ok, thanks. I have to explain. This faverolle cocherel came from first hatched eggs. And my first eggs at all. First ( i have to repeat) got this resperatory illness my araucana chick (pullet), shes eyes were swollen and she has bubble liquid in her eye. And its about 4 mounth ago, all my hatched pullets and this faverolle cocherel are come from this one hatching in may (sorry my english) These eggs were bought from Germany. I had a lot of problems with sellers- all AC chicks was not pure breed.
Now, I dont have neighbours, we live in isolated countryside. We dont have visitors. Ok, araucana got sick first. After her this faverolle cocherel got sick first time (between 7 days) He did not have this bubble water, but his one eye was swollen. I treated them with Pharmasin. Then we got new pullets, after that this faverolle cocherel get second time swollen eye. Yes I know, we live in middle of meadows and we have wind in daily. But in my country was extreme hot summer. Middle of summer my dog got kennel cough. I notice, he eating chichen poop. We traeted him with antibiotics. He´s still coughing.
My country is little a bit crazy. We dont take chemical drugs lightly. We have our own medications like honey, ginger, garlic. If i read some of chicken deseasis- bubbling eye means always atibiotics. In my case- there is no third treatment to my cocherel, because they become immune to tylenol. Pictures tomorrow, because they sleep- in Europe is almost night.

Very good to know, thank you! While my flock does have CRD, that probably explains why my Fav cross presents worse than my other chickens and her overall health, which is good, would indicate.
