cochin disposition

hi guys, i've decided to try out having a cochin, i've heard they're sweet. are they kind of like a BO? how big do they get (LF)? and what color and size of eggs do they lay? i hear they don't lay very often though. i'm getting a partridge cochin pullet. although i wanted a white one.....the partridge are very pretty too. i would appreciate any info regarding their personality etc.

I have one cochin pullet that was accidently mixed into our chick order. When she was very young, she was very assertive, would boss the rooster around, and I thought she would be the queen of the flock. Turns out she is low on the pecking order and is often bothered by pecking, chasing. She is very sweet, has been from day one, she comes to me, will eat out of my hand nicely, I can pick her up for inspections no problem. She doesn't lay every day, but pretty near. She will be a yr. old in May, and really wants to be a mama. She has had to be broody broke twice now, perhaps next time, I'll let her hatch some eggs, hmmm

I think if I would have planned to get a cochin, I would have gotten two or more, just so she could have a friend like her. All my other birds have 4 others like them...

i just think they're cute as can be with all their fluffiness. i'm gonna have a mixed flock....2 EE, 1 PC, 1 BO, 1 Silver Cuckoo Maran, 1 silkie, and 1 showgirl. so it should be interesting. thanks for the info!

I have a flock of bantam cochins and I LOVE THEM!!!! They are precious balls of fluffiness. The girls started laying at 5 months (in the dead of winter) and have not stopped. One went broody this week so I am letting her set a few eggs. I also just hatched a few in my LG that I am excited about.

I have a whole flock of them as well. They are very sweet. One in particular comes up to my boot and gives it a little peck every time! They are very curious and make good mamas. They are VERY accepting of new chickens into the flock, even the rooster. I have two partridge and three buffs and a mottled. I love their big poofy butts! lol. For one hen I usually get an egg on day one, day two and then they skip a day, then lay again on day four. The eggs are medium size and range from light brown, almost pink looking, to a medium brown. My girls are standard sized birds. They look huge because of all the fluff. They are probably 4 to 7 lbs.

The hens are great broodies and the roosters are gentle. I've had many BO roosters, but none as friendly and gentle as the Cochins. Plus, they look awesome out in the yard.

The only drawback is that they don't lay many eggs, so if you are looking for eggs, you may want to add a couple of layer hens to the flock.

I have a Buff Orpington, an Australorp, Silkie, Bantam buff Brahama and one blue Cochin. April, the Cochin is far and away the sweetest of the bunch. She is very mellow and will follow me around when she is not doing her own thing. She is a bit of a loner and I am planning to get another Cochin this spring. She lays about 4-5 eggs per week, large brown ones that often have speckles. She is never fussy or aggressive, just a gentle fluff ball - I LOVE her!

We keep a flock of Giant Cochins, they are so gentle. The rooster is the friendliest large breed I've ever been around. The girls lay medium eggs which is kinda small for the size of these birds, but they are good to eat. Ours lay pretty consistantly only on occasion do they skip days. They make great incubators

and come in many colors to enjoy. We have lemon blue, barred, buff, gold laced, and silver laced. We did have partridge, but the possums have slowly wiped us out.

We had a couple of double yolkers layed from the cochin girls, but thats pretty rare for them. (not like my cuckoo maran hen that lays double yolkers every time so far

) When they are out pecking around the cochins are the first to come around and see what you might have for treats. Usually what looked good to them is actually just the zipper on your jacket, but its funny to see them jumping up at you to get that shiny object. Oh and they love pecking at your rings on your fingers too.

Excellent, he doesn't chase our daughter. Our rooster is a partridge cochin. He gets lots of compliments on his color, probably because the other two roosters on our road are just plain old skinny white guys (Gold comet roos) and Fred is so big and colorful. He's lazy but is protective of his women.
