I have a cochin/wyandotte hen mix and when i gather her eggs she stips laying but if i keep them in there she will lay but i don't want the eggs to go bad...she acts like she wants to set on them but she will stay on them all day one day and then the next day she want even touch the nest....i have tried replacing the real eggs with plastic easter eggs with some weight and even some wooden eggs...but she will move them to the side and lay one egg and set on it..but comb is a bright red and it come's in and out everyday...bright red one day and light pink the next.....what is going on with her ?
(a week ago we had a bad storm and there coop got damaged and all of her eggs got broken....could this be why she is acting this way ? she had about 8 eggs in her nest..) Please help :) thanks

She isn't yet determined to go broody. And yes the damage to the coop may have put her off. Question do you want her to go broody? The red of the comb fluctuates, due to heat, or hormones.

i don't mind either way...but if i gather eggs she stops laying but if i leave them alone for a few days she lays more lol so i guess i will have to let her go broody...i am new to this but i have been around them all my life...but i have always watched mom lol she has a roo with her and i see him everyday with her...so i know the eggs has to be fertil but she is split the eggs into 2 bunches and takes turns setting on them lol there are only 6 eggs out there...i really dont know lol she has been weired everysince she started laying.....

Not that this helps any but my mother in law always thought chicken would only lay 12 eggs. They would stop laying once they hit that number. Like they have a instinct.

anyone else ever heard of this?
