Hi everyone,
I have a 9-1/2 week old Blue Cochin who is one of five mixed-breed pullets that I picked up as day olds. They were integrated into the hen house/yard about 3 weeks ago where four other 16 month old (mixed breeds) hens live. Today when we returned home from work, Baby Blue was missing feathers from the front of both legs. The bare spots are uniform on both legs, and only in the front. I found a few of the feathers here and there. I inspected for mites and other parasites, nothing. I didn't (or haven't) witness any of her flock mates pecking at her, they all get along well. Of the four older hens, the one that is the bossiest and most likely to peck is broody and stuck in the nest box. I was watching Blue a little while ago and it did seem like she was getting a little frustrated when trying to traverse a weed patch and her leg feathers were getting caught. What gives, do Cochin have a tendency to pull out their own leg feathers?
