my fav cochin started acting very reclusive last week - thought it might be age since we inherited her, but she's also getting weaker. today i went out and found her in a very low nesting box and one side of her face/eye is swollen and greenish. also, the side of her upper body is also swollen. when i picked her up, she weighed less than a shoe! here's a photo of the bad eye:

and one of the good eye:

can anyone have recommendations to help me get her better? do i need to take her to vet?

If you are willing to take her to a vet, that of course is always the best way to go. Could the swelling be from a snake bite? Spider?
If you can keep her in a warm, quiet place and watch her that would be good. Make sure she eats and drinks. Offer her treats like yogurt or scrambled/hard boiled eggs. Put some gatorade or sugar in her water for energy. Is she eggbound? Feel her abdomen and make sure it is soft and squishy. What do her poops look like?
Good luck and maybe someone else can think of anything.

It might be Infectious Coryza. Try a search for that.

Can you give her some Pedialyte in her water to hydrate her? If she's not drinking on her own, you can try dipping her beak or putting drops of liquid on her beak. In the last case you might syringe fluids into her with a syringe and a rubber tube, but it is possible she will aspirate fluids and die.

Have you tried getting her to eat hard-boiled egg?

It looks like coryza. I use tylan 50 and would inject 1 1/2 cc's into the meaty part of the breast every other day until cleared up usually about a week. You can also use terramycin in the water but but if she is feeling bad and not drinking very much it could take a long time to heal. If you need more help just pm me. I would be glad to help.

It's not Coryza. It's only on one side, there's no source, no odor, no discharge. Mostly just a swelling or knot under 1 eye, neurological symptoms (body held twisted to the side), weakness, and is eating small amounts

edit-oops, I was talking about my roo, sorry. I don't know what this cochin has

It could be that. Its hard to tell from a picture for me. But coryza will cause swelling under one eye. and the reason for no discharge is that it is backing up and swelling out under the eye.. Coryza ,sinusitis and others all stem off a cold. A bird cannot blow his nose like we can and it cloggs up and all the discharge backs up and causes infection that smells and causes more swelling. If it is neurological i don't know much you can do. Strong antibiotics is it's only shot.
