Cochins or Orps

i've raised cochins and orpingtons and I honestly prefer orpingtons (I may be biased lol). But in all seriousness, they lay a good amount of eggs for being such a broody breed. Whenever I had cochins they would only lay about 2-3 eggs a week. Where as my lovely orps most of the time layed a consistent 4.

I also like how orpingtons are clean legged which makes them less prone to mites, dirt, and feces build up. And one more thing to add is orpingtons really make great mommas! When I was young my grandmother had a batch of rhode island red chicks hatched and raised by an english orpington and it was the most precious site ever! That same orpington has raised chicks the majority of her life and she was the catalyst or driving force for my poultry passion.

Orpingtons all the way! But cochins are cute as well.

Sounds like you had really crappy Cochins (in terms of eggs) - please do not base your views of the breed off this 🤣 I do have to ask if you had bantams or LF, as I only have experience with LF. Mine lay 5-6 eggs a week for most of the year (excluding molt) and keep themselves clean despite the mud. Plus Cochins are super excellent mamas too 💕
