Sounds like you had really crappy Cochins (in terms of eggs) - please do not base your views of the breed off this I do have to ask if you had bantams or LF, as I only have experience with LF. Mine lay 5-6 eggs a week for most of the year (excluding molt) and keep themselves clean despite the mud. Plus Cochins are super excellent mamas too

Oh shoot I did forget to include that! I raised a small batch of mottled cochin bantams, so I do believe that makes a difference in egg laying capabilities.
