Because I don't know how to insert a proper dash, aside from copy-pasting.

Yes, like those.
(Admittedly, I cannot tell which of those is which, but I believe that the longer one is a proper dash).

Another reason why I use two hyphens is because of the fact that in LibreOffice (the document program that I have on my computer), typing two hyphens results in them becoming a dash when you place a space afterwards.
