cocin's bottom filled with worms, help

Definetely maggots. I have seen it a few times, and always as you have described, poopy vent area and there usually is a wound of some kind in the area as well. Congrats for being able to handle the clean up. My hubby and I cannot stomach it really so we end up putting the birds down.
My neighbor had a bot fly lay eggs under the skin of his corgi dog and she had maggots coming out of two different places on her back. You could see them under the skin and everything. He managed to get them all out andkilled with a spray (which gave one corgi an allergic reaction and her hair fell out-lol) but the maggot dog made a full recovery.

A little late... but just thought I'd throw my two cent in the mess in case this ever happens again...

Could be Screw Flies also. The flies lay their eggs under the skin. The maggots hatch and feed off the bird. The vent and abdomen are most commonly affected. Either way, give her a bath and thoroughly clean her. The maggots will eat the flesh and cause infection very quickly.

Thanks guys for checking back about our girl. Unfortunately she didn't make it. She stopped walking a couple of days after I posted. We tried keeping her in the house and fed her and watered her and she did seem to get stronger but she wouldn't walk or move at all on her own. I am still uncertain what her full injuries were, I am assuming a critter got her and that the leg or infection got worse. Her wound actually looked pretty good, but after a week she still wouldn't move on her own. We took our dog(on leash) right up to her and although he didn't move to attack, she didn't even respond to the danger. He had chased them when we first got him so the hens tended to move away whenever he was out. It was clear she wasn't going to recover. We were quite sad. I appreciate everyone's help. I wouldn't know what do to without this board:)
