Thanks All, a lot of good info, getting rid of him is out of the question, he's a pet and he takes good care of my 5 girls. I have a light on a timer that goes off at 4:00 AM, it is there for heat and light, it is a 60 watt bulb. I think if I can go to like a 5 watt night light bulb that may work better for low level light but then I have the dilemma of heat. I know I can work that out. I am in north central Vermont, we had a little snow today and it is going down to the low 20's tonight, last winter we had a few nights at 20 below zero in the mercury and they say this winter will be colder then last winter due to the lack of sunspots. Who knows.
Someone mentioned their roo comes out of a nesting box when anyone approaches, should I have a box for each of them? They all stay up on a perch about 3 1/2 feet off the floor near a window so they can see out and seem to stay together that way.
As far as offending a neighbor goes, my closest neighbor, about 1/3 of a mile away said when I asked him if it was a problem "I have alzheimers and if it does piss me off I can't remember so don't worry about it" and he was serious. All my other neighbors have chickens but no rooster. He could possibly be hearing a rooster in the distance that I don't hear and that may be setting him off. He crows a lot in the daytime also, I wonder if he hears an echo or if he is testing to see if there is any other roosters out there "Hello Tokyo"...I also wonder if he is lonely and just needs another roo to keep him company, I will probably get a RIR in the spring, one roo and 2 girls if I can find them and integrate them into the flock, that should be a trip. Peace, out.
