Cockateils Thread- Albino-Pearl-Pastel-Silver and so MUCH MORE!!!!

Oh, forgot to tell you this, when Rodney is on top of his cage, its still his house and he will defend it.either hissing or pretending to bit.
If you can get a perch stick and tell him to step up, I know he wont, but if he only gets one foot on it,then tell him goodboy and praise him with your hands behind your back!!!! Your hands might be a threat for now.
as for him not singing because you are, two reasons, one he don't know his new flock, and or he is trying to learn your new song.
but remember keep your hands behind your back for right now.
I don't know if you are willing to get another teil (male) one that had owners that died or do to illness, but most of the time you can get a great tail, and give him a forever home.reason why I asked this is because Rodney will see HEY WHY ARE YOU SO NICE TO MY FLOCK, THIS CAN OPEN A DOOR FOR RODNEY TO SLOWLY FIND OUT WHAT HE IS MISSING.

GOTTA GO
TAKE CARE SHERRY

Thanks for the advice. We have been going slowly, but I think not consistently enough. We will see about getting his wings clipped, a good idea. My son is quite responsible about keeping the door closed, but it only takes one moment for something bad to happen. Quite frankly, poor Rodney is so out of shape, I don't think he would get very far, though! Sometimes during the day I bring him out in his cage to sit next to the parakeet cage. They seem to enjoy the company and one of the parakeets really tries to chat with Rodney. So cute. Perhaps I should do this more often, even though he hisses at me when I'm moving him.

So if Rodney is in his cage, should my son try to put his hand in a bit to get the bird used to it? He has used millet to lure him out before. Maybe this would be something to do consistently.

Thanks again!

My big freinds, cockatoo, macaw, and my grey they don't have there wings clipped. Macaw Sonnie, she don't know how to fly lol, my cockatoo, is the same she don't know how to fly, but it can happen. My grey Charger oh yes he knows how lol, but he will go after my Lady cage and chase her, lol don't worry I am there to get Lady and put her on her perch.
I never want anyone to go though the pain and guilt plus the heart breaking that I went though. That's why I really am strong on clipping wings with smaller parrots.
I had my very first baby teil, lol, my adults cockateils ran around the house umm I think I had 15 at the time. My husband and I always was home hubby on disability, and I was home to take care of him. My kids left home, so I thought HEY LETS GET TEILS lol we love them to death, those were are kids, lol they even act like kids, yelling at you to pouting, and even playing hide go seek, chewing things that THEY KNEW THEY COULDNT, that's when they get very quiet, then you know they are up to no good, they are a blast!!!
A pair of teils, Cuddles (female white face cinnamon) Hubbles (white face pied) found a place to nest, me not knowing that eggs had babys lol, one night I heard a small chirp chirp, I check out the nest and here I see a baby, my very first, I knew nothing about how to take care of them. 7 days old, Cuddles (mommy) had a yeast infection, so the vet said take the baby out!!! And handfeed it, so I ran around, looking for help on feeding, my feed store showed me hands on how to do it.
7 day old baby needs to be feed every two hours, day and night, heat was another thing they need.
needless to say WE DID IT!!! we named him Struggles, he did have displayed legs but my husband fixed that struggles looked like he had snow shoes on. I didn't want his wings clipped, his toes was curled, so I thought he can fly to get around.struggles was a very small bird very tiny, he bonded to me like crazy, I would say SHOW ME YOUR WINGS HE WOULD DROP WHAT HE WAS DOING AND LIFT HIS WINGS UP UNTILL I SAY GOOD BOY. THE BOND WAS CLOSE BETWEEN HIM AND I!!! he would wait for daddy (hubby) would walk int9 the living room and would get attack in the face with struggles body slamming him lol, then struggs would land on the table yelling at daddy telling him off lol.
with wings lets just say I went outside and didn't know he was behind me and I closed the door on him. Its been 8 years and the pain is still in me.
But a door opened for me, due to struggles, both my hubby and I got into breeding cockateils.
my babys, are not just handfeed but handled, loved, and playfull. I teach them to be picked up by their body, they are handled like a vet would do, touched and petted every part of there body's. They are very happy birds, that's how they should be lol.
That is why you need to clip his wings, I would never want anyone to go though the pain that I did.
As for your question about taking the babys out of the nest, my parents will let me lift the adults up lol
Just pick them up with a body grab lol, they don't bit, or yell. But its a relieve for them, they don't have feed the baby anymore, its like ok mom its your turn lol.

Very sad about what happened to Struggles. Must have been incredibly hard for you and you must miss him, but I have to say, even though his life was short, I'll bet it was better and happier than the majority of pet birds in the world. In that way he was very lucky.

Thank you, I think of him every day, but all happy thoughts.
he had a very happy life, he was so spoiled lol
but he opened our door to breed cockateils, as a hobby. Its been a very fun hobby, and we learned so much from cockateils. We love watching and paying attention to how they think, each bird is different, they are not the same just like humans.
keep asking anything you need to know about Rodney, and I can try to help
take care sherry.

Are you thinking about putting Rodney, around his new flock (your family) so he can watch, and learn?
when we have dinner, I have a plate for my buddy's (birds) ummm, brown cooked rice, eggs (no butter or salt) veggies, they love pasta, really the can eat almost anything, just read all the no no food. Lol.
Like dogs, dogs are pack animals, its like human eat first then the dog gets to eat, that means human are the pack leader.
birds are not pack animals but flocks, some are higher in rank to eat, but most of the time they all eat together, at the same time this will show Rodney that he is part of the flock, eating food the same time that your family does.
everyday you need to work with him!!!! Trust is the biggie, you can open his cage, give him the choose to come out or stay don't rush him, if you have no time, even 30 min. Is good, but keep it the same time, like 6 pm every night open his cage, this will help him understand, and helps with trust.
Oh yea, if you make eggs mix it with the egg shell, its very good for them.

A very good site for you to learn from
Birdchannel.com
its all about parrots, you can learn a lot even with people that have the same type of problems like you.

Thank you again! I will have my son read this too. A consistent time for training is a great idea, hadn't thought of that. So far, Rodney is afraid of new foods. It just sits there and dries out while he cowers in the corner, but if he sees us eating, maybe he will get the idea! I hope I have good results to report some day.

It takes time!!!! Offer the food, if your keets get out, they can. Really help Rodney open up more, and he might eat the food because the keets are.that is why I asked if you could get teil that needs a home he will open Rodney up faster, like eating what isoffered at dinner time and such
umm you asked about having your son put his handing his cage, to a bird way of thinking ITS HIS HOME HIS SAFE HOUSE, so I wouldn't just wait untill Rodney comes out on his own, lol but millet can help outside his door. Just keep your hands behind your back for right now.
this will take a lot of time, but Rodney is watching every move anyone makes
later I will tell you about the right food (birdfood) this might build up his weight.

Im BAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAACCCCCKKKKK !!!!!!!
