Cockerel attacked my foot!

If you decide to keep him, don’t let your guard down. He may seem like he is getting calmer but he may just be waiting for you to let your guard down before he attacks again.
I personally would cull if he is rough on the ladies and he draws blood from you. Especially if there are young kids in the house or the neighborhood, his spurs would be eye level to a little kid when he charges and flies up.

Cockerels can be horrid, especially to pullets. Older hens don't let them get away with bad behaviour but young ones just put up with the abuse. I'd give him a chance to mature and see how he is then if you'd like to keep him around.

Do let us know how you get on.
Hi
Just a little update..I think he was a bit on the nervous side, most probably sensing my nerves, never having any experience with cockerels 🤷‍♀️ After spending the last few days getting to know him, he is so cute, he’s got a really good personality, even chilled around our 3 dogs. I think he will be staying 🤞

How old is the boy?
So sorry, only just seen this 🤦‍♀️ He is 5 months…I was just looking back on comments. Although I updated saying we have got close and he was a sweet boy, he’s totally tricked me! I can’t work it out, 1 minute he’s so cute, the next minute when I’m not looking, he puffs himself right up and goes for my ankles 😳 he just charges right at me. It is not just me, it’s my husband and son also.

My husband recently culled one of our roosters because he kept attacking our kids and even us. I felt bad about it, but we couldn't trust him. If your rooster keeps attacking you and especially your son, you should probably get rid of him.

Another update 🤦‍♀️ He is such a sweet boy…until I turn my back, at that point he puffs up to the biggest he can be and attacks my ankles! He attacks my husband, also my son (aged 29) he’s like a Jekyll and Hyde 🤦‍♀️ I’m actually torn at this minute..we have young grandchildren, so we can’t keep him, we can’t rehome him, it wouldn’t be fair. But one of our family (my husbands, all farmers) has a friend who will take cockerels/roosters and put them in a pot for his restaurant 😳 I don’t know how to feel about that, bearing in mind I eat lamb, steak, pork, chicken 🤷‍♀️ Any thoughts on this?

But I know what u are saying , I’m one of them ones who does palliative care, domiciliary work, so it will be a blow xx

Because you have such a big heart, maybe you should work with him a little more to see if he truly has the potential to be a good boy. He’s mostly just doing his job of being the protector, if you think about it. He’s still pretty young. He’s a teenager trying to establish dominance. Don’t go in there being scared. YOU are the head rooster. Start off by giving him handfuls of treats like mealworms, oatmeal, scrambled eggs, etc. The way to a guy’s heart is always through his stomach. He needs to know you are the boss. Do you ever hold him and/or walk around with him in your arms? There are videos on YouTube showing how to deal with an aggressive rooster. If, after looking at the videos you don’t feel like you can train him...well, then chicken soup it is! 😂
