Cockerel attacking pullet

I would continue with the wound care as you have been doing. But the rooster should be separated. I had a young cockerel do this to my Polish hen, and he ran her out of the pasture and left her in a ditch scalped. My husband shot him later that day. His brothers were all gentle boys, and we rehomed several and kept one. I do not tolerate a mean rooster. There are too many good ones.

They have other flockmates. She is isolated in my laundry room with wet mash, scrambled eggs, water and electrolytes.
We threw the roo in with the big girls. They won't put up with that. I'm.looking for a dog crate so I can fatten him a bit before slaughter.

There is no loose skin, I think he ate it 😞

Also, how often should I apply antibiotic ointment?
Apply however often enough is needed to keep the wound moist (meaning moist with antibiotic ointment, vetericyn spray, etc while it heals.) Once daily may be enough, but only you are there to know.

I just now did a byc search using the words "chicken scalped, and "chicken scalped by rooster" and quite a few threads popped up. (This type of injury is even more common in quail.) I didn't link any of those threads here because I thought you might want to choose some to read through yourself. I can link a thread or two here if you prefer.

The bacitracin stays wet for awhile, so I will reapply in the morning. Her head still looks wet.

Wtf?!?! My 11 week old cockerel just attacked my 14 week old pullet. He repeatedly pecked her head and flipped her over. Pretty sure I can see her skull in one spot. Cleaned with povidone, vetricyn and packed with bacitracin. Going to isolate her for at least the night. Anything else I should do?View attachment 3082165View attachment 3082166View attachment 3082167
Get rid of him or kill him. I had a situation like this before. Roosters like that aren’t good roosters to keep around at all.

So she seems completely fine. No signs of shock or anything. How many days of healing do y'all think she needs before I can return her to her flock?

Below is one thread you can read through for guidance. There are many more threads re scalped chickens and how to treat. Eggcessive (who has already responded here on your thread) gave some good info on her post #9 in the thread below that should help answer your questions. I think if you read through a few threads on the "Chicken scalped" topic, you will find answers to All your questions. If not, you can always ask your questions here.
