Hi, there!

Quick question: I have a 6 mo Silver Sebright cockerel. He crows A LOT from about 5 am on. But lately he doesn't get started until almost 7, and he crows significantly less frequently during the day. He looks, eats, drinks, poops, mates as per usual.

Is it possible it's because it's been much colder than he's used to (not THAT cold - just colder than in recent weeks)? Is he just maturing and feeling a little less like proclaiming his magnificent presence to the world? Or should I be more concerned about a health problem?

MY GUESS IS BECAUSE IT DOESNT GET LIGHT AS EARLY NOW. I KNOW THIS TIME OF YEAR IT GETS LIGHT AROUND 7 OCLOCK NOW.
Ahhh hah... tell that to my boys who crow at 2:30, 4:30, 5:30, 6, etc. :p

Okay, if I'm being real... I do have about 13 boys right now. So they got a lot to say. :D

That's a good guess, but roosters don't crow because the sun comes up and the farmer needs an alarm. They crow because they're roosters... to warn off predators even false ones they heard, to attract ladies, show how virile they are, let other roosters know it's their territory, compete with other roosters, etc. It's one of their forms of communication along with a broad range of other sounds and motions. They can actually see a broader color spectrum than us... including UV, so they can sense the sun a couple hours before sunrise... is my understanding.

Each boy will develop as an individual. Some crow excessively all day long. Others just a short whole in the morning. Some sound annoying while others are more pleasant sounding. All my current boys are bantam and all are more high pitched, less pleasant than large fowl crowing are. (something I should consider since I'm breeding) :hmm None avoid crowing because of pecking order, they just move away and crow. :)
