Cockerel doesn’t know what to do

So I have this beautiful red silkie cockerel who is 9 months old. He is in with 2 hens of around the same age but only 1 is laying.

The issue is, he doesn’t seem to know how to do his job very well. He grabs the hens head from the front and proceeds to mate with the floor in front of her.

Will he get the hang of it or do I have a cockerel fail?

He should get the hang of it... I have 2 bantam roosters (both also ~9-10 months old) who did/do basically the same thing to my standard sized girls... they still don’t have it 100% down but they try their little hearts out... it’s 2 roosters to 13 hens and fights are EXTREMELY rare and tend to be when they try to mate each other more than over the girls ...

I wouldn't stress it at all. I am sure he is doing his job. Trust me chicken are like bunnies. They breed. There isn't any internal penetration. Additionally, you can simply crack an egg open and check for a fertilized blastoderm. The bullseye tells you everything.

Yep my 5 month cockerels arent v. gent with the hens either.

haha... yep he'll get the right position eventually, just practice. My cockerel looked so funny trying to mate when he was younger, I can't help but laugh (quietly to myself) when he's on the pullet sideways! Obviously not hitting the mark

Has he ever gotten it right?

Not that I’ve seen. He may do when I’m not looking but he only crows before he tries so I am normally notified of the impending comedy show
