i bought a new japanese cockerel a couple of months ago, and i have never seen him mate with his hens. i travelled 200 miles to go and get him, coz he is a cuckoo and rather beautiful, but can help but wonder if i have been sold a dud roo. he was born in may 2013, so they told me, and i bought him along with a lemon hen. her comb is still very pale, and she is not laying yet, though the other (4) hens in with them are (who were also born last may/ june) but i had these from chicks.i see him attack the girls every morning, pinning them down, but never see him mate with them. my other jap roo (black mottled) who is the same age as my laying girls is doing his job very well, and we have hatched chicks from him and the females mentioned above, though he is no longer with them as he is related, i have him with my laying flock of pekins (eggs for eating not hatching). am i being too impatient on my new roo? all advice greatly appreciated xxx

not yet as i thought they could still be fertile from the other cockerel. hes been in with them for 2 and a half weeks now

Yeah, technically they could still be fertile from the other cockerel for up to four weeks. I guess my advice would be if you don't catch him mating by then, crack an egg and see what's going on.

they are not fertile :( gutted as i went a long way to get him, and paid for him (only a tenner but still) and of course he is so beautiful. i had so many plans for him......
