Cockerel or Pullet?

What the heck happened??! I'm so sorry! :(

I put three of my chickens in my old chicken pen to test it out. Test failed. A neighbor’s dog bulldozed right through it. I guess she just wanted to play with the chickens because she didn’t eat any of them.

The last time I had chickens I didn’t have any neighbors with roaming dogs. Luckily this was a test and I diversified my risks. I only lost three instead of 12. I still have 9 safe chickens living in my shed that is sealed off really good. Also I wasn’t home when this happened. My dogs are really good at letting me know when this particular dog is in my yard. I wasn’t home to hear the barks.

I'm really sorry... I would have some very harsh words with that neighbour.

Nah. I haven’t even told them. A human friendship is worth more than three chickens to me. Besides this dog has done this before. This is just the first time any of them died. I’m on great terms with the neighbor. I even like that dog. I’ve been raising chickens long enough to know to expect 50% casualty. I started out with 18. Now I have 9. Two just died within the first week. I had four disappear with no clues. These three were killed by Sasha (my neighbor’s dog). I just have to be very vigilant now and let them live in the shed until I can breed them next summer. If I can hatch another 50 chickens from the 9 I have left I should be in good shape. I’m going to have to build a pen that can’t even be penetrated by humans. It’s always a learning experience. My goal is to get 12 hens in my second generation. I’ll hatch 4 times that. It was a calculated risk that I knew I was taking. It is more my fault than the dog’s or the dog owner’s fault.

This is a cockerel. The reason it hasn’t developed much wattles is because it has a beard and the bearding gene inhibits wattle growth. It also has a different kind of comb then probably what you’re used to seeing. It’s called a Pea comb and does not get as large as the more traditional appearing single comb. The red feathering over the wings and shoulders is also classic in male EEs. Not all chickens will developed spurs and both males and females can have them.😊
Well said !
