Hi all

I thought managing your flock seemed to be the most appropriate thread for this post.

I have got far too many cockerels with my hens at the moment an I cant seem to give them away!

Had them advertised for months and no one wants them, so it comes to the conclusion that I have to "get rid of them".

The problem being Ive hatched the whole flock from eggs and I have quite an attachment to them.

I don't want to give them to someone to kill and eat as I want to know they've killed them humainly.

So (eventually) my question is, what is the best way to put them down? I do have an air rifle, my thoughts were when they are asleep take the cocks out and "do the deed" with it as they will still be in the sleepy stage.

Any help would be great

A sad topic I know :(

You will get many different opinions on this. For us, the method is the hatchet and stump. We feel that it's the quickest, kindest way. Yes, they bleed. Yes, they flap. But they are dead in an instant.

Yeah that's what I thought, well today I asked a friend and he said he knows how break their necks properly, better someone else than me but atleast I know its gonna be done properly
