My cockerel, John, has suddenly come up with very pale, dry skin around his eyes and beak. He doesn’t seem poorly, he’s eating well and feels fairly plump. I couldn’t find anything online that described his condition. I thought it could be scaly leg but his feet are normal. We do have red mite at the moment because some wild sparrows got in and spread it to my flock. We’re treating everything and all birds with diatomaceous earth and burning red mite nests we find. Could someone help me with this?

Either dry fowl pox or scaly leg mites, look at the feet and see if the scales are lifted
His scales have feathers poking out in between each scale and he’s been like that since a chick. Could that still be scaly leg? And how do I treat both of these diseases. Thank you

Get a Permethrin based poultry dust and dust your birds. Spray your Coop with Permethrin poultry Spray.

For this poor guy, in addition to dusting him, apply some vaseline, triple antibiotic ointment or coconut oil onto his face to help smother mites.

I’m uk based and it’s not available here, some Reddit threads say it’s quite abrasive/harsh on skin? I’ve got Dergall which can be used on chickens and the coop. Would something like Sudocream or Savlon/ Germolene be ok for his skin? It’s human grade antiseptic cream.

Since you are in the UK, can you consult with your regular dog/cat vet to see if they can prescribe something to actually treat the mites? In the meantime, I would use Vaseline/petrolatum on his face and comb. Can you get ivermectin? Sometimes the white chaulky skin around the comb and face can be a fungal infection called favus. Miconazole or yeast creams can be helpful in treating that. Sulfur powder for gardens may be more effective in your coop for treating the mites.
