My second AC cockerel just started crowing today (sounds bloody awful) but I noticed his tail is lent to one side, when I look back at old pictures of him, it's always been lent to one side? Is this bad? Does he have a deficiency or is there something supplemental I can give him to straighten it?

Trust me to chose the wonky chicken

Well he's very pretty. :)

I think that's called a "wry tail" and is just how he is. don't think there is a breed standard for these guys. I have Svart Hona, and they do have a breed standard in Europe anyway but not here in the USA. In the SH, they do not find that trait desirable. But since there is no breed standard for AC, you can't show him anyway. If there are other things about him that are desirable to you, maybe he can help you achieve your goals with his offspring. I guess the thing with a wry tail is maybe he will pass it on to his chicks. You might want to consider that before using him for breeding; but I don't know how likely it is he will pass it on. Hopefully someone with more experience will chime in and educate us. :D

ETA: Whoops posted at the same time as everyone else! Now I will read what they said!

He has wry tail, and it is a heritable trait. His is not particularly bad, but he still should not be used for breeding.

This is what I was dreading. See I got give five of these cockerels so I chose the blackest one without even looking at his conformation. I'm gonna have to track that guy I gave the others to... a cockerel hunt has commenced!

I too managed to keep the wrong cockerel this year; out of four bantam boys, I kept the one with a wry tail, the first one to appear here. EVER. He will be leaving, but with many regrets for the cockerels now gone who were better! My cock bird is doing fine, but I hate to be down to one male for the group! All I can add is, next year we will both choose better! Mary
