at about what age do cockerels start to crow

Depends on the bird. I've seen some start at 2 weeks old while others didn't crow at all (low birds in the pecking order).

Yup, depends on the bird, the breed and their place in the flock pecking order. I have some that are 8 months old and I have never heard them crow, but others who are more dominant crow a lot.
