Coco just Cock-a-doodle-doo'd!!

So, I was checking on my girls this morning and as I walked away I heard a cock-a-doodle-doo that stopped me cold in my tracks. I turned around and to my horror I notice it's my favorite "hen" crowing at me. We have 11 girls in the coop all together, they're about 19 weeks right now. I'm not supposed to have roo's so......is there ANY chance she's just taking up as a dominant female or this definitely a roo?

Oh no that looks just like my ee rooster I just had to rehome. It seems it is always your favorite that ends up being a rooster. Mine started crowing at ten weeks. You can tell by the red patches on his wings and the three row comb. Sorry if you can't keep him, I was heart broken.

Now I know what mine would look like all grown up, and he is a beautiful boy.

This makes me SO sad. Well, he's not going anywhere until someone from the city has the balls to come out and cite me! I guess we'll have to think of a more manly name than Coco though. I got shorted one of my EE's from the hatchery to begin with, now I'm down another layer. I may have to find someone to trade some of my hateful RIR's for EE's. Thanks for the input though! It's awesome having a place I can come with all my newbie-related questions.

It is sad. I tried to keep mine, but he started to get aggressive with everyone but me. I also have a few neighbors that I know would call animal control on me over and over, so I rehomed him that way I had a say in where he went. I hope you have more understanding neighbors. I am in chicago so our houses are pretty close, and everyone hears that lovely crow, but not all enjoy it as much as I did.

So far all of my neighbors love the chickens, I have one house I would be concerned about. It's a rental with a high turnover rate that we've ALWAYS had problems with but the current occupant seems to mind their own business (And she's a Texan who was excited when she saw the coop 'cause her Nana always had yard chickens'). And, our city is pretty understanding on enforcing the code from what I've been told so if someone does report me then I will get a warning and be given something like 5 days to comply before being fined. I do know several farmers who would love to have him if it came to that so I know if I have to rehome him I have several good options. We've already rehomed 5 barred rock roos that we got with the girls as packing material to them. Hopefully he stays under the radar!

Happened to me tonight!! When I bought my three EE chicks, they were from a sexed run...ha! I was pretty suspicious of "Amelia" anyway, and when the lovely crow happened, it was confirmed. Luckily my MIL has 4 hens, no roos, and three are EE hens from the same run my roo is from. She has 200 acres and can handle a roo. Looks like we may be in the EE chick business

I have one more I'm waiting on...hopefully there will be no crowing from this one!!
