Coffee's ready...

Just got back from a local county fair. Had an incredible piece of wineberry/peach crumb pie with a scoop of home made vanilla ice cream at one of the grange stands -

They had 15 or so different pies - I wanted a piece of each.
What are wine berries and did you get the recipe ? With just DW and me we can't eat a whole pie. She though has to watch her sugar.

Wineberries are similar to wild raspberries, but are much more tart. They tend to grow in the shade along woods edges, creeks, and swampy areas in widely scattered bushes. They are a wild berry, and picking them is a time consuming process. I asked the baker who picked them, and she replied,"me, the kids hate picking them." My mother used to make a wineberry jelly - light pink, almost translucent, and wicked good tasting. I was the berry picker, and understand why the 'kids' hate picking them. Did not get the recipe as I have not yet graduated to baking anything other than biscuits.

RancherHicks: The fire tower challenges/hikes are a list of fire towers in the Adirondacks and Catskills mountains. There are 23 in the Adirondacks and 5 in the Catskills. There was or is more of them, but they were either removed or on private property. I think of the 28 towers, you only have to do 23 to get a patch. We met a group of people (3) that had to be 65+ in age on one of the towers recently. For us, we get to check out new places in the state. We have done the mountains that are above 3500' in the winter and summer in the Catskill range and working on sleeping in all the leantos in the range. One of the best was a 4 day hump around Cranberry Lake in the Adirondacks. It rained on us for 3 days, but we were able to get and maintain a fire each night and sleep in a leanto. Some of our hikes are by compass and map.
There are loads of places around here for nature walks. Seems like more and more new places are popping up all over. You should check out the Nature Conservancy (http://www.nature.org/) for trail listing and if you have other nature groups in your area for trail listing.

Sourland: Those wine berries sounds like something we have in the Catskills. The better half grazes on them when ever we come across them. I forget what she calls them, I'll ask when I see her.

Our turkeys are getting bigger, planted some more beans and lettuce. Froze a bunch of blueberries last week, much to my better half dismay........ but I did make her a German Blueberry Kuchen.

Enjoy your day
Kaj

I find it strange that Germans refer to a blueberry pie as Kuchen, that should be a cake in my opinion. What kind of crust did you use?

1 1/2 cup all purpose flour
2 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp salt
3/4 cup sugar
1/4 butter
2/3 cup milk
1 tsp vanilla
1 tsp grated lemon peel (1 lemon)
1 egg
1 cup blueberries

Mix flour, baking powder, salt and sugar. Add butter (melted), milk, vanilla, lemon. Beat for 3 minutes with electric mixer or 300 stokes by hand(?). Add egg and beat 2 or minutes or 200 strokes.

Turn into a grease 8 x 8 x 2 pan. Sprinkle blueberries on top with a little bit of sugar.

Bake for 40 - 45 minutes at 350f degrees.

A gallon on ice cold milk or ice tea to wash it all down....... Roll on to the couch and call it a day.

Enjoy
