Coffee's ready...

Morning People,
Coffee's hot, morning is cool. Another dry day, but we had a good soaking rain last Friday. It turned the garden right around, filled the ponds and streams. We are going to be gathering up our youngest daughter so she can take the nursing boards. Stress level: HIGH...
Today's projects: splitting wood, working on coffee grinders, jewelry boxes and finishing staining 2 shelves.

Good Morning!

I got back from a two week holiday to find all kinds of new people on this thread. Welcome!!
I also found that my garden had been attacked by a woodchuck with no mercy. He ate all my brussel sprouts (they were doing so well, too - the best year ever), broccoli, cucumbers, and cabbage. He ate the new young beans - so tender - that were to be my second crop. The first crop is flowering now - he didn't eat those. I guess I'll plant some more today, although I don't know whether the season will be long enough. The tomatoes look great - I guess the leaves are too prickly. He could have helped himself to the overflowing zukes, but no.

Somebody ate all the apricots - I had about ten that survived a spring frost. Left me with one and a half. I ate them both. Delicious. My peaches aren't ready yet, but you are absolutely right, Karl. The night before you plan to pick them, the coons come around and have a feast. I think I will take a sleeping bag and camp out underneath the tree.

It's been really dry - we could do with a bit of rain. Good to be home though - there is nothing like going away to really appreciate home. There is a chorus of young roosters singing to me now. In all there funny voices - cracked, warbled, high, low - they are telling me to get going. But, I am having a second cup of coffee first.

Have a great day, Everyone.

Morning! I love this weather right now - "cool" in the mornings (50-60), then warms up to 80 in the afternoons.

I have a TON of blackberries to can up. Well, not a ton. Two gallons. Close enough to a ton.

Good morning chiocken wranglers
Kismet I see your holiday has left you refreshed and perky. All of you guys that have joined or rejoined this little thread ,welcome.
All I can say is let the canning begin! Last night the wife put up 7 quarts of beans with onions and bacon. Tonight it is beans with ham and onions. This year her goal is to can and plan the menu for the year "until next years harvest!
Well good luck. Iknow how frugal she is so it may just happen.

I wish we had berries but I think I missed the season.
I'd settle for tomatos. Anyone know when to pick Acorn squash?

Posted to roos on CL. A Lavender Amer roo and a Del.

Coffees gone and got to mow grass today. House is still crowded, but DD and SIL will be headed to TX at the end of the week. DD got teaching job in Houston. Their gain , Syracuses loss.

Chicks hatching in the coop under broody hen.

Have a great day

Karl,

Do you think your wife could advise me on how to can ? ?

Would she mind kinda writing down step by step instructions as she is doing the canning ? ?

My growing season is over with until fall. The only thing growing in my garden right now is okra, watermelon, and eggplant.
I grew green peas this spring, but I had time telling when to pick it so that the peas weren't too young or too old.
GREEN BEANS - - we had almost NONE this year. I think we went from freezing to HOT HOT HOT weather way too quick without enough NICE temps. In the past, our green bean production was HUGE ! ! We gave so much away.

I really need to learn how to can - - but I don't have anybody locally to teach me.

we typically just follow instructions on canning recipes but I will be happy to help in any way I can.

I recently bought a copy of "atlas recipes for home canning and home freezing" for a whole dollar at an antique store. It's just little booklet. About twelve pages. I can fax them to you if you like. I could probably put two pages to a 8x11 page. From the Hazel Atlas glass company Wheeling W. Virginia.

Most canning a freezing techniques are the same.

Recipes might be had by request of specific vegetables and fruits. I'm sure posters here would have some.

I like to go to the bookstore and look at magazines and find recipes that way. I found a nice one for refrigerator pickles.
