Hey all-
I live in NH and have one NH red chicken. Tonight it is -30 and very windy, and a small coop door is open. I have a heat lamp going, but is that enough? Thanks!

It is hard to say. We don't know much about how your coop is. You only have one chicken. Not much body heat in coop for sure. The small coop door being open is probably not necessary since one chicken wont produce that much moisture to need that much venting. -30 is quite chilly. Chickens combs and wattles do freeze . there are things to do if such happens. But you are a passionate person and commend you for putting in the heat lamp.

If you only have one chicken, I would bring her into the home or basement. I wouldn't worry about spoiling her. One chicken , has no others to huddle with for warmth. Heat lamps are always a fire risk, and with the open door, she is a "meal" waiting to happen for any predator that comes along.

Welcome!

I'm glad you joined the BYC flock.

I don't know if that will be enough. Can wind get in through the door? You don't want any drafts, especially on such a cold night. It may be a good idea to bring her inside or into a basement for the night, as she doesn't have a friend to snuggle with on the roost.
