Cold Country Coop Size?

I'm not sure it would be POSSIBLE to heat a coop to above freezing in Minnesota. Well, I suppose it might be possible, but probably very expensive.

People do it in Alberta etc, where they get -40 and lower; I am sure it could be done in Minnesota (after all, you do it with your HOUSE dontcha? LOL) It just takes some combination of good insulation and a high electric bill!

(I am 100% not advocating this, just commenting that it IS, amazingly, sometimes done.)

This has been a very educational thread!
I had read earlier about supplemental lighting during the short days of winter but I didn't catch on that it was for egg production ... until this thread.
I plan on having two windows in the south wall. 32 x 44 inches. I got one last year at a rummage sale. I'm watching for another. The sideways-slide-open-type thermopane. I think a roost in front of the windows is in order for the winter months. (It'll be lower than the beddy-by roost.)
I just caught myself before I started going on and on about ventilation. I think I already explained my plans in this thread. I've been asking so many questions and been on so many threads that it's all running together in my head.
