Hello!
I live in texas and I have an indoor duck (Ling). We are experiencing the winter storm with uncharacteristically low temperatures. Ling has been inside with me the whole time but he he losing his feathers at an alarming rate. It looks like he is molting but it doesn’t make sense that he would want to lose feathers when it is this cold. Is this normal? Should I be concerned? If this isn’t a normal molting time then it might be from the stress, if so, does any one have any advice on how I can help him?
Thank you so much,
Hollie & Ling

As an inside duck its not surprising to molt in the winter. That being said i have not seen a duck loose so many feathers as to be to badly compromised. Of course If you duck is used to a 70 degree house all his life and now its 10 degrees thats probably not good.

I would assume if your duck is indoors full time it wouldn't really care about the weather outside.. also it's really not good to keep just one duck, it could be stress related. Ducks are flock animals they are very social and need other ducks around.

It's not uncommon for a couple of our (outdoor) ducks to molt in the winter. Poor Martha, our tiniest silver Appleyard is molding right now during the coldest temps of the winter. Thankfully, it's just her flight feathers, and she still has her toasty down suit. Can you post a picture of Ling?
