My mum has seen how much I love having my chickens and is now wanting to keep some of her own. She lives in Hauser, Idaho so it gets pretty cold in the winter. Any suggestions on laying/multi-purpose breeds that do well in the cold weather?

Speckled Sussex are very cold hardy, as well as the Wyandottes, Orpingtons, Plymouth Rocks, Jersey Giants, and Delawares.

Just remember to tell Mum, to put a coating of vasceline on their combs during the super cold weather. It helps prevent frost bite.

Don't forget Faverolles, Marans, Cochins, and Brahmas.

Don't go for breeds with single combs, and you won't need to worry about frostbite.
