What is the coldest weather you've had a hen successfully hatch and raise chicks outdoors? The temperature outside is currently in the 40s on average. Will my broody hen be able to hatch and raise her chicks in this temperature? Obviously they will be completely sheltered from the elements.

Teens. They were hatched mid-winter (late December) and were doing well until their mother went nuts and scalped four of the five (first brood.) The one cockerel chick survived and he grew to be a pretty big rooster, after a silkie randomly adopted him.

20s.

One batch was hatched late fall, so it wasn't quite that cold then. All five survived. And they were not sheltered from the elements.
