Colic in horses

Yep, haylage is actually pretty good for horses, since the process of drying grass out to make it into hay causes some loss of nutrients.

One thing you can try is adding salt directly to the haylage to encourage him to drink, I'd also cut back on the apples and carrots, those contain a LOT of sugar for such a tiny guy.
 
Thank you for your advice. The haylage we use is grown on a farm down the road, in fact my daughter helps bale it. It is literally cut from the meadow and brought into the farm yard where it is baled and wrapped in plastic film. The wrapping makes it airtight and prevents it decomposing. The vet says it should have the smell of ripe apples and indeed it does. The horses love it. It is more readily available here because the nutrients are preserved and it is better quality fodder.
