EXACTLY!!!!

Each Vet School has their own set of requirements. You need to get in contact with UGA to learn their specific requirements so you can plan your classes to become eligible for vet school. Also you need to determine what non-acedemic requirements they have for entry: application, essay, interview, weighting of extra-curricular activities, etc.

My wife had a B.S. and a M.S. in Ruminante Microbiology, but she had to take 18 hours of refresher classes (Organic Chemistry, Genetics, Microbiology) before the Vet School would accept her application. So you need to talk with the Vet School to understand what they want.

i would contact the admissions department and explain to them you have a GED (you may be classified as non-traditional or something) and ask what requirements you will need to meet to get accepted into the college first and explain what that your goal is to go to vet school and discuss all the possible routes you can take to get there. they will probably refer to you different departments that can give you more specifics about what major to choose and what classes to take. just make sure you dont waste time and money taking classes that wont transfer!

UGA Vet School Admissions

Here are some of the highlights for UGA:

In order to be considered for admission, the applicant must have either a cumulative grade point
average of 3.0 or greater, or a combined score on the verbal and quantitative portions of the GRE
of 1200 or greater. Applicants must meet one or the other of these two criteria to be considered—
both are not required.

Grade Point Average is calculated three different ways:
Cumulative GPA — all courses taken within eight years prior to the October 1 deadline, plus fall
term courses taken when the student applies.
Science GPA — all required science courses taken up to and including the fall term when the student
applies.
Most recent GPA — most recent 45 semester hours (quarter-to semester- hour conversion = quarter hours x .667). If
the 45 hours are reached in the middle of the term, the entire term will be used.

Professional activities and experience are taken into consideration:
This includes all activities and experience with animals and veterinary medicine; evaluation
forms from at least one veterinarian and others best able to judge an applicant’s qualifications;
extracurricular activities; applicant’s academic record; and a written statement giving the
applicant’s reasons for wanting to study veterinary medicine.

This link will give you the whole story on Admissions Requirements: UGA Admissions REquirements

Here are the required courses for admission:

Required courses (in semester hours) must be completed by the end of spring term with a grade of C or better prior to fall matriculation.
• 6 hours of English;
• 14 hours of humanities or social studies;
• 8 hours of inorganic chemistry (full year with laboratory);
• 8 hours of organic chemistry (full year with laboratory);
• 8 hours of physics (full year with laboratory);
• 3 hours of biochemistry;
• 8 hours of general biology (full year with laboratory);
• 8 hours of advanced biology courses (recommended: comparative anatomy, microbiology, cell biology, genetics).

This statement on On-Line courses illustrates why you need to talk to UGA and not rely on information that people like me might post on the internet:

17. Can I meet admissions requirements by taking online courses?
In general, meeting science requirements for admission to a college of veterinary medicine requires rigorous coursework supplemented with hands-on laboratory experiences and proctored examinations. Hence, prerequisite requirements cannot usually be met by online courses; laboratory requirements certainly cannot be met by online experiences. However, on occasion a prospective applicant may request that an online course from an accredited university be considered for credit towards a requirement for admission. In this case, the applicant should provide detailed published information and course materials to the Admissions Counselor which minimally includes a course description, course syllabus, description of examination procedures, and contact information for the course instructor(s). Additional information may be required by the Admissions Counselor before conveying a written decision to the prospective applicant. It is important to realize that online courses change from year to year and that there is no guarantee that any online course will be approved. Thus it is advised that approval be sought prior to taking an online course intended to meet a prerequisite requirement.

i wouldnt even bother contacting the vet school yet, honestly. that is four years away and you cant really major in "pre-vet" you have to pick a major in itself such as animal science or biology with pre-vet intentions.

if you want to contact someone at UGA, i would contact Dr. Pringle at the UGA animal science department, he is a pretty chill dude (whereas a LOT of them are NOT at all, lol) and he will give you information on the programs of study. just explain to him that your goal is to get in to vet school and ask him what routes he would suggest. he can refer you to someone directly in admissions who will be helpful and you wont have to go round and round. you may not even need to go to athens tech unless you just want to. first step is to find out the admissions requirements and how to proceed, whether you need to start out at athens tech or not? mention to him that you have a GED and ask him who would be best to contact in the admissions department.
then find out from them if you will need to start out and transfer from athens tech or not.

i will pm you his email address.

(oh nevermind your inbox is full)

Mind if I join in?

This is a pretty old thread, Teachick. You may want to start a new thread if you have specific questions you want to ask! I think there might have been a college thread somewhere around here though! It can be a pretty popular topic!
