Collie and chickens?

With that starting point in mind, assume the dog has no experience with chickens. My dogs are great around my / their chickens. I am not certain they would give someone else's flock any quarter unless I was there to intervene. They could easily destroy the strange flock and not being doing it for fun, rather to protect their flock. Livestock guarding dogs can present the very same challenges.

You must get dog to accept your residence and your flock as it's own.

I didn't even think of that. Okay, so start from scratch. Got it.

Here she is, in our house. I went and picked up dog supplies today, and am going to start searching for obedience classes.

Not so much tried as socialized but my Border Collie does well with the chickens and ducks. She rounds them up at night, or so she thinks. But otherwise leaves them be. They free range, as does she and there have been no issues in the past three years.

My Shepard, well, not so much. :p She leaves them be under my watchful eye but if I left her alone with them I think she might have a snack. She was not raised with birds though.

Anyway, socialization seems easy enough. Training them beyond that, I've not a clue.

Good luck!

We are debating buying a collie (rough collie, not border). Our neighbor has two 6 month pups left from their litter. They have chickens so the pup is used to them, but theirs are always penned up. Ours run free part of the day. The neighbors have already done some behavior training, so the pups are gentle, and stop when told "no".

I know collies are herding dogs, but has anyone had experience with chickens with them? How do you train them to protect the chickens?
my pup rory is AWESOME with our chickens, and she didn't even grow up with them. collies are smart and will love the job
