color genetics question

Tim, which birds would you need/how would you create the lemon mille fleur? Thanks!

You are going to have a bird that carries the cream gene and a mille fleur bird. How you do it depends on the genes carried by he cream bird.

* There are many reasons why these basic guidelines are not followed, eg developing a new variety, developing disease resistant lines, to avoid inbreeding depression (infertility, etc), to improve type in a line & so on..... It is only a guide.
* It is important to keep accurate records/pedigrees.

Colour Breeding Lines:
* Cuckoo, Black,
Lavender
* Blue, Black, Splash
*
Millefleur, Blue Millefleur, Golden Neck (Splash Millefleur)
*
Porcelaine, Millefleur
* Quail, Blue Quail, Splash Quail
* Lavender Quail, Quail
* Silver Quail, Blue Silver Quail
* Lavender Silver Quail, Silver Quail
* Blue Mottled, Black Mottled
* Lavender Mottled, Black Mottled
* Buff Columbian (Fawn Ermine), Blue Buff Columbian
*Buff Columbian, Lavender Buff Columbian

*Columbian (Ermine), Blue Columbian
*Lavender Columbian, Columbian
* Silver Millefleur, Silver Porcelaine,
* Blue Silver Millefleur, Silver Millefleur
* Cream, Buff
* White

~ those in purple bold are the colors i currently have ...so is the golden neck considered the splash and if so how since it has no black on it?
No my splash girl has the faintest hits of gold and is mostly gray white with black splash...not a lot.
to get Mahogany Mille Fleur i was told to use mille fleur and black mottled...
I don't think so if that were the case I would have a ton of them. I hatched out the first time, Black Mottled over Mille Fleur and Blue Mottled, I got a 1/4 Blue Mottled,1/4 black Mottled 1/4 Mille Fleur and 1 Blue Mille Fleur. After that I got mostly Black Mottled and Blue Mottled and no Mille's. Neither has anyone else that hatched my eggs.

And could you tell me, how do you tell if they have the cream gene?

You have to get that oversea's or make one. My guess is it may be easier to try to breed one then to get it over seas. I'm going to use a Cream Light Brown Dutch, this is just for s***s and giggles, unless it works then I will be jumping up and down.

The bird in the picture looks like a spangled bird with mottling to me but it could be cream mille. The bird would have to carry the genes needed for spangling which is different than normal mille fleur. A person can produce the bird in the picture without cream but it is much easier to use cream. I have produced cream on wheaten and birchen ( the gene) birds. Mille normally are not spangled but should have a white tip with a black V on the end of the feather. All the spangled talk is for those that understand genetics behind spangling etc.

Here's how to do it.

Find a superior mille fleur male x with a cream light brown females = F1 offspring each offspring will carry a mottling gene and look like a poor black tailed red. What the F1 look like depends on certain genes found in the mille fleur .

Cross an F1 male with an F1 female = hatch eggs until you get F2 cream mille fleur female(s)

Cross the F2 cream mille fleur females with the superior mille fleur male = BC1F1 offspring black tailed red

Cross the best BC1F1 male with the best F2 cream mille fleur= some good looking cream mille fleur (citron mille)

I do not know what breed you are working on but start with a superior male. If you start with a ho hum male expect ho hum offspring.
