Hens can be fertile for up to a month. Is it possible that one of her sons jumped her at some point prior to setting eggs? Did anyone get out of their pen? Are the pens close enough together that a rooster might breed a hen through the wire? Just not really genetically possible to produce that cockerel from the pairing you claim.

My Golden Cuckoos are ER based, and I know black coppers are also.

My F1s from this pairing have produced brown chicks:

The issue is, a rooster with two copies of the barring gene will not produce chicks without the barring gene. It is simply not possible. Another rooster/cockerel must have bred her within a month of the eggs being set.

I'm very familiar about all his offspring being barred. You can imagine my suprise when this one wasn't. It probably was one of her sons that mated her then.

@morbius18 Hello. My chickens from the first batch were all fathered by a blue splash , but different mothers. I assumed that one in particular was mothered by the splash marans that was in the pen, but just a couple weeks ago he developed barring in his hackles. They're easy to miss. As far as I'm aware, cuckoo marans type barring is sex-linked, so the only possible mother for that cockerel was the cuckoo marans in the coop instead of the splash marans. I guess what I'm getting at is that the surprise offspring could have some barring that is hard to see at first glance.

This is the one I was telling you about... he looks like a splash, so it was easy to assume the mother is the splash marans since the father was a splash too (but a different breed).
The second 2 pictures show a close-up of the hackles and saddles growing in cuckoo though. He started getting those at around 16-17 weeks old.

The Blue gene has an inhibiting effect on barring. For him to be Splash, like he is, both of his parents must have had at least on Blue gene. Either his father or the Splash hen have a cuckoo/barring gene. The double dose of the Blue gene just suppressed it.

I was planning on crossing my Black barred Golden Cuckoo marans rooster with some blue copper hens I have, trying to get blue barred. Will this work, or will the blue gene give me mostly blue birds and black barred birds?

You will get 50% Blue with barring, and 50% barred. It's just that the barring can be difficult to see when combined with the Blue gene.

Blue with barring looks like this guy. Not sure if that 's what you're going for, but he is a handsome cockerel.
His mom is a cuckoo marans.
