I don't understand color genetics very in depth. I do know some of the basics. When I want to figure the results of a cross I pull up the web site of the chicken color genetics calculator. Having said that I've hatched several generations of Buckeye chickens and overall about 1 out of 10 ends up being pure white. Now with my new breed (Buckeyes being one of the foundation varieties of my breed) I still see around 1 of 10 being white. Any ideas of what might be going on?

There is a recessive gene called recessive white that causes white birds to pop up.
Simple, isn’t it?
I’ve never heard of it in Buckeyes, but maybe yours had a recessive white breed crossed in at some point.

THANKS! I know that generally with recessive genes there have to be 2 copies present to express the trait. So the approximate 1 in 10 appearance of the white color makes sense as I generally breed my rooster to 4 or 5 hens and collect eggs from this grouping for a hatch. He must carry the gene and at least some of the hens do.

May I see them? The Buckeyes? I’ve bred Buckeyes for a few years now, so of course I have interest in this sort of thing.

I don't have the Buckeye flock anymore. My son wanted chickens and I gave them to him. I do have several Buckeye chicks that are around 1 month old and I can take pictures of those if you would like. Also, I will be helping him remodel his home this coming weekend and while there I can take pictures of his hens. I culled the rooster as I only wanted my breed and he served no purpose (he also had a broken leg which would not seem to heal).
I may keep a rooster and a few hens from these chicks and re-start my flock but not sure if I want to do that.

No, it’s fine. I was just curious to see white Buckeyes.

I just took these. The first 2 pictures are of the older chicks. The white is a Buckeye and the others are my breed (notice the barred patterns, more noticeable on some than others). The next 2 are pics of the younger chicks. This little flock has some Buckeyes and some of my breed.
